Calgary Winter Hair Survival Guide

If you live in Calgary, you know the drill: the furnace kicks on, the humidity drops to nothing, and suddenly your hair is dry, staticky, and snapping at the ends. Winter here is brutal on hair — but it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s how we tell our clients to get through it.

Switch to Hydration Mode

Your summer shampoo routine won’t cut it in January. Cold air and indoor heating strip moisture fast, so swap in hydrating formulas for the season. We love evo’s The Therapist Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner — it’s made for dry, thirsty hair and actually delivers without weighing things down.

Mask Weekly (Non-Negotiable)

Once a week, give your hair a proper drink. The Great Hydrator Moisture Masque is our go-to recommendation: 5–10 minutes while you’re in the shower, and your hair comes out feeling like hair again. For seriously compromised hair, the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask works at the molecular level to rebuild what’s been damaged — it’s the closest thing to a reset button we know.

Fight the Static

Static is the unofficial mascot of Calgary winter. A light leave-in or a tiny bit of smoothing oil on your ends tames flyaways without making hair greasy. Silk or satin pillowcases help too — cotton creates friction, and friction creates frizz.

Be Kind to Wet Hair

Hair is most fragile when wet, and winter makes it worse. Don’t rough-dry with a towel (squeeze, don’t rub), detangle gently from the ends up, and if you’re heat styling, always use a heat protectant. Always.

Don’t Skip Your Trims

It’s tempting to “grow it out” all winter and skip the salon. But dry ends split, splits travel up, and suddenly you’re cutting off three inches instead of half an inch. A dusting every 8–10 weeks keeps everything healthy.

The Bottom Line

Winter hair care isn’t complicated — it’s just consistent. Hydrate, protect, trim, repeat. And if your hair is past the point of drugstore fixes, come see us. We’ll get you sorted.
